Hello all,
I'll start out by saying this: I'm a sports, workout, and outdoor activities nut in the U.S. I'd like to keep that up while I'm here... but it would be way more fun to have other people to do that with. (Exercise will keep me sane and help me avoid insomnia from having so characters dance around in my head. Seriously.)
So I actually have several different goals (information, propositions, requests, etc) with this post, but I'll start with what I know and ask that people respond as they want about whichever of the items may or may not interest them.
1) RUNNING: I like to run several times a week (3-4 on average), though it looks like it will mostly be the track, the campus, a treadmill at the gym, and around Da'an park (does anyone know of anything better around here?). However, I would like to go outside the city once every weekend or every other weekend, perhaps in the morning (but not too early like before 8-9AM or anything, unless forced to do so). I was thinking of finding a place that would be accessible by MRT and/or a bus and would only require me taking a key, my wallet, and maybe a water bottle. In fact, I would be willing to lead a group of people. After the run, we could all have breakfast somewhere.
2) HIKING: I am also interested in hiking on the weekends, at least once every two weeks. I am not an expert hiker, but I am in good aerobic shape so I would like to do something a bit more difficult than a leisurely promenade. I am also willing to help coordinate this sort of thing, and I have a day trip book we can use to choose stuff from.
3) GYM: I signed up and have gone to the pool twice at the NTU sports center. The pool is 1000 NT for 6 months (1800NT for a year) and 750 for the weight/cardio room, so 1750NTD total. I also went off-campus to negotiate at California Fitness and the best I was offered was $1999NTD per month and waiving any initiation fee. (Needless to say, I am not joining, but I am enjoying my 10 day guest pass still.)
4) SPORTS TEAMS: I don't know if they have intramurals here or not, but either way I think it would be fun to start up some recreational teams. Past sports I have played include softball, tennis, ultimate frisbee, and some racquetball, but honestly I'll join in on whatever people want to do (soccer, basketball, whatever). Any interest?
5) FREE KICKBOXING CLASSES: I just went to the first one the other day, run by a Danish student (I think at shida?) who is a former national champion. We are meeting every T/TH from 8-10pm and Saturdays 12-2 at the Chiang Kai-Shek memorial hall plaza. See his website: www.cheaphippie.com. Right now it's a couple of other foreign students, myself, a boom box, some basic equipment, and a boot camp/boxing type of workout. It's not aerobic kickboxing, it's a lot of sports drills, plyometrics, abs, and kickboxing moves (depending on skill level) and requires no coordination of any sort... did I mention he's doing this for free?!
Ok, that's what I know. Feel free to add or respond as you want or ask questions.
